Irena Saparnis
Artist Statement: Architecture and the beauty of buildings are translated onto my Batik interpretations. About: Her interest in architecture and the unique personality of each structure she chooses to depict is reflected in her work. Her mission is to infuse all her subjects with new spirit. Irena Saparnis, born in Lithuania, has a Master's Degree in Architect and Art from the University of Technology in Vilnius. She enjoyed an early career in architectural design and in 1993 moved to Illinois and began producing beautiful batik "paintings". Process: Batik is a fascinating and complicated technique which involves multiple applications of waxing and dyeing the fabric. Irena often starts her projects by layering photographs onto silk.
